4. You’re Not the Father

I was lounging on the couch in my living room watching Judge Mathis when I heard a loud pounding on my front door. I had gotten off work early because we had finished loading all the trucks for delivery at the furniture warehouse where I worked, so there was nothing left to do. My boss allowed everyone to go home and still get paid for the entire day. I didn’t think that it was my son because he had a key, so he had no reason to be knocking on the door unless he had lost his key again. My Wife wasn’t due to be back home for another three hours, so I couldn’t figure out who was at my door and why they were banging like they were the police. I stood up from the couch and stretched as I walked to the door. I pulled it open without even looking through the peephole to see who it was. Just as I snatched the door open about to give the person a piece of my mind I noticed it was one of my son’s friends who was knocking on the door.

M-Mr. Williams…” Jerry gasped as he tried to catch his breath. He had run all the way from the bus stop to Mr. Williams’s house, so he was out of breath.

“Hey, Jerry. What’s going on? Devin isn’t here. He hasn’t come home from basketball practice yet.” I said, smiling down at him.

I thought maybe Jerry was coming to ask Devin to play ball with him or something. “He must’ve been excited to play ball with Devin for him to run all the way over here.” I thought to myself as I opened the door wider to allow him to come in and wait for Devin. His body was covered in sweat as he continued gasping and wiping sweat from his face.

“Mr. Williams, you have to come quick!” he yelled, placing his hand on his chest still trying to catch his breath. “It’s Devin. He got hit by a car.” Jerry finally got out as tears ran down his face.

“What?” I asked astonished.

“We were crossing the street, and a car came out of nowhere and hit Devin. He’s hurt bad. You have to come, Mr. Williams. Come quick!”

“What? Oh, my god! Devin, I’m coming, son.” I shouted as I turned and ran quickly back into the house to get my shoes.

Once I had on my shoes, I grabbed my keys from the coffee table and jetted out of the house. Since I was lounging around the house, I only had on a pair of basketball shorts and a t-shirt but what I was wearing wasn’t important. I followed anxiously behind Jerry as he led me to where my son Devin was hit. So many terrible thoughts were going through my mind. Was my son dead? Is he going to be alright? Oh no, not my boy. Not my son. I continued to walk silently behind Jerry as we neared the street where I could see a crowd starting to form.
